Understanding Dental Implants

Dental implants mimic natural teeth extremely effectively. The base of an implant is a titanium screw (post) that is placed in your jawbone. Once placed the post is allowed to heal for a number of months during which the bones in your jaw integrates with it. Because titanium is biocompatible, your bone can easily integrate with it and they will form strong bonds. Once the bone in your mouth fuses to the post the bond they create can be stronger than that of a natural tooth root. They can be used on a single tooth or on multiple teeth.

Once the post has healed we can place a crown onto the implant. To do this we have to add an abutment that acts as a surface for the crown to attach to. We fashion the crown by taking an impression of your natural tooth before the procedure begins.

Implants can also act as an anchor for several different dental appliances. Bridges that span over a few teeth can be anchored using either one or two dental implants. Likewise, Dentures can be made to sit permanently on several dental implants so that you don’t have to deal with messy adhesives ever again.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Bone Loss Prevention

Besides the obvious benefits of giving you back the ability to chew and speak, dental implants can prevent bone loss. When a tooth is lost or extracted the bone where that tooth would sit is no longer being stimulated. When bone isn’t properly stimulated it has a tendency to recede. Bone loss in the jaw can lead to the loss of teeth around the originally extracted tooth. In short, bone loss can create a domino effect and dental implants are a great way to prevent it from ever becoming an issue.

Candidates for Implants

In order to receive a dental implant first you must be a good candidate to receive them. There are a few risk factors that make it difficult for dental implants to succeed, the biggest of which is tobacco use.

Implants require a certain amount of bone structure to support them. If too much bone loss has occurred within your mouth it may be necessary to have a bone graft done. Healthy gums are also a must when it comes to implants. If a patient has gum disease steps would need to be taken to address and reverse it. Gingival grafts can be done to remedy the loss of gum tissue.
